Karma HMI Design
While at Karma Automotive I was the UX lead on the infotainment system redesign. Karma Automotive (Karma), formerly known as Fisker Automotive, is a pioneer in high-end, luxury hybrid cars. I evaluated and translated an existing infotainment into a more modern design to include a more user-friendly and personalized user experience for the driver. The Karma Revero relaunched in August 2016.

As the UX lead, I conducted usability test sessions, benchmarked additional electric vehicles for best practices on the HMI, created and maintained the style guide for the overall systems, created multiple wireframes for both the cluster and touchscreen designs, and led efforts for content strategy, user research and more.
The main problem with karma was the complete lack of driver personalization, long start times, irregular design, and a screen that was difficult to use, ultimately harming the user experience. What made the HMI difficult to use was that there were no physical buttons to control the screen and minimal use between the buttons of the steering wheel and screen.
I had the opportunity to resolve these problems by collaborating closely with the SW engineers and give users a more modern, user-friendly design. There were four main friction points with the previous design on both the instrument cluster and HMI: 1) Lack of Boundaries 2) Poor Readability 3) Unnecessary Variation 4) Unclear Element Relationships
As a solution for this redesign, I zeroed-in on challenges, added new processes to accelerate the software development production, increased clarity, and built out product specs, use cases, and sitemaps. I also created a sitemap for each system, assisted with engineering scoping and design forecasting, while also increasing clarity and consensus for project plans.
I designed the Valet Mode system; Bluetooth pairing process; conduct research studies on the vehicle Sound Design; collaborated with Apple to ensure a successful implementation of the Apple CarPlay system; designed a shortcut menu system to quick and nimble often repeated actions and more.
